DJ Sets [MP3s] from Roy Davis, Farina, Gene, & more...
![]() The Gathering - San Francisco has so many dope DJ sets from The early to late 90s, when Rave was King. There are many MP3s to download, just expand each folder and "save-as".
These MP3 files are created from WAV files, which in turn were generated from the DATs recorded from the mixing desk at each party. We started recording with audio tapes from 1992 to 1996, and with DAT from 1996 onwards. We intend to create MP3 files from the content of the audio tapes and post them here over the next few months. Downloading all of these MP3 files will take you a long time. If you want most or all of the sets, save yourself the downloading effort: Send e-mail to pfk001@gmail.com, let me know what sets you want, and I'll burn WAV or MP3 to DVD for you. 10 great beat-making videos
![]() 1) Here is Masaaki (aka Anchorsong) from Tokyo, playing live with an MPC2000 and a Triton keyboard, building the tracks as he goes along. More great clips here and here.
2) Here is Daltron from Melbourne, playing an incredible live drum solo on the MPC4000 (it's a MySpace video. I'd say it's worth typing in your password, but not worth registering specially...) 3) Here is Pete Rock sampling, remixing and singing along with 'Love is a Battlefield' 4) In this report on an Atlanta beat battle, there's no live MPC action, but it provides several answers to the age-old question: 'What the hell kind of face am I supposed to pull when my music is playing on big speakers, people are listening, and I don't have any gear to fiddle with?' 5) Here is the old-school version - making beats on an Emu SP-1200. Love the sliders. 6) Here is DJ Shadow talking about his ancient MPC60, the machine he made 'Endtroducing' on. The clip has cruddy sound and Shadow always comes across as pretty irritating, but it's history. 7) Here, speaking the international language of Akai, is French producer 20Syl, with a step-by-step guide to making laid-back MPC/Rhodes/Loops hip hop for expensive Parisian bars. 8) Here is Just Blaze putting together a big horn sample and some beats. It's nice to see that even big name producers spend most of their time stroking their chin thinking: 'Hmm... This sounds OK, but what am I going to do next?' 9) Here, DJ Quik talks eloquently and at great length about his custom MPC3000. 10) If you've actually read all the way to the bottom of this list, then here is a treat to say thanks. Mush up, Get Down..The Hood Internet
![]()
I recently read about the The Hood Internet in a RedEye article. Here is the article. Steve Reidell and Aaron Brink pause when asked to consider the nature of their band. After all, what does one call a laptop-playing duo that makes songs by mixing music of indie rockers with the vocals of rappers? "I still consider [a DJ] as someone using turntables," Reidell said. "We don't really do that; we're more--digital jockeys." Brink chimed in: "Oh, that sounds terrible." "I can do worse." "Do it." Reidell delivered the clincher: "Instead of on the ones and twos, we're on the zeroes and ones." Brink, 28, and Reidell, 29, have been operating as The Hood Internet since 2007. It has not released a single physically tangible album but has more than 1 million downloads, prompting the claim that it has gone "Internet platinum." Their works feature a sampled part of a song by, say, Spoon, laid over rhymes from Ghostface Killah. The band has posted more than 150 tracks for free download on its Web site and just released its fourth mixtape, "The Hood Internet vs. Chicago," which features 23 full tracks from Chicago-linked original artists. "I thought it was fun to do some different artists and more underground artists than we typically do," Brink said. "We were really searching to find what was out there from Chicago and make use of that." They found a lot: Hip-hop duo The Cool Kids meets beats from house mogul Frankie Knuckles, industrial godfathers Ministry collide with Yea Big and Kid Static, and, of course, there's "The Super Bowl Shuffle," complemented by Wilco and Kanye West. Brink and Reidell both said they may eventually move into other forms of production that would directly yield money, but for the moment, they're happy with things as they are. If only that definition could get worked out. "I would consider us primarily remixers before calling ourselves DJs," Brink said. "Maybe 'Masher-uppers.' " He paused. "That's worse than 'digital jockeys.' " Check out all of their music on their site. Posted by david.o ![]() Read more | 0 comments
